Little Lakes Peak on L to Rosy Finch + Pyramid Pea...

Description

In the midst of the Rock Creek valley, between Box Lake, Chickenfoot Lake, Morgan Pass, and Mt Morgan. Great views of the higher peaks from Bear Creek Spire to Mt Mills, and down to many pretty lakes. Rock is mostly granite talus, with some more solid climbable granite on sections of some ridges (esp NNW + NW). Often recommended to do along a traverse to (higher) Mt Morgan.

No trail to the summit. Nearest maintained trail is the Morgan Pass trail from the Mosquito Flats trailhead parking (GPS lat long ~ N37.4352 W118.7470) - (altitude 10240ft / 3122m).

Easiest way to the top is usually said to be hiking/scrambling up the South face from the trail at Morgan Pass.

NNW ridge and NE ridge have lots of class 5 climbing sections, though perhaps many of them can be avoided, so some guidebooks + reports suggest their difficulty could be kept within class 4.

Two guidebooks say that the SW ridge has some class 5 sections in its lower part. One report says they avoided this by starting on the W face.

Getting There

driving: Rt 395 to Toms Place (north of Bishop + Mt Whitney, south of Mammoth Lakes + Yosemite). Turn SSW onto the Rock Creek road and continue SSW about 10.5 miles / 17km to its end at the Mosquito Flats trailhead. Snow is not plowed to the end in winter.

approach: Hike on the Morgan Pass trail, then leave where convenient to reach desired climbing route.

Lots of interesting fun class 5 moves (even more class 3 + 4) on a ridge often narrow in the midst of pretty mountains and lakes, not far from high parking. Ridge has several gendarmes and at least one knife-edge section. Rock is mostly featured fractured granite often turned in unusual angles. Length of climbing more than Mt Conness North Ridge, but different style of granite and less dramatic large-scale situation (though the section-by-section exposure is enough real).Ridge crest is exposed t...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
