January at the Lion's Den, Menifee

Private Property MORE INFO >>>

Description

Located on a small hill off Leon. Mostly sunny, can be quite hot in summer. Never seen other climbers or sign of climbers.

There is a lot of potential here. New climbers beware, many climbs not established and exfoliating granite can break. However, the granite is of mostly good quality.

Feel free to message about climbing ratings. We need more hands on the boulders so we can create some consensus!

Getting There

Head east on Newport Road in Menifee, will turn into Domenigoni Parkway. Turn right (south) onto Leon - it will turn into a dirt road. Location will be just after the bend on your right (northern side). Can't miss it - if you hit Holland you've gone too far.

Löwenanteil AKA Lion's ShareCan Be Top roped.Amazing problem. Begin on the obvious holds on the arete, and climb up. Hardest moves are the first half. Climb up to the easy slab for a glorious top out. Enjoy the view and be prepared for a sketchy down climb on Sour Puss. Highly recommend a rope for downclimbing....[more]   Browse More Classics in California

Randomly came back to MP to look up some desert route info and noticed the Leon boulders got put up here. Glad to see some new blood on the problems and document the spot as we never really named much. The 2 bolt sport route had been climbed since the 80s per some old I.E. guys. Myself and some buddies put up a lot of the boulder problems about a decade ago when I lived down the street. I cleaned what you guys call Lions Share, thundercat and others. Both stellar lines, but our ratings were on the easier side. V3 and 2 respectively.

I did not put up Lions share. However the route was ultra dirty, very loose, and did not seem like it had ever been climbed. If it had there must have been a fire, the holds were peeling off under finger weight.

Awesome to hear from you Graham!

I can see Lions share being quite softer. I was talking about it the other day, but decided to leave it until someone else got on it. Big flakey holds broke off while we cleaned it though... maybe it's more difficult now?
The start for Thundercat seems very height dependent to me. I'm about 5'9'' and if I don't stack pads it's easily a V4 move for me, but with stacked pads it's a V0 move maybe. This is another line that I would like to hear from others about. I can see it being softer or harder... I definitely would like some consensus.

I would love to hear more about the area from you though! If you're around it would be cool to meet up. Maybe you got some lines we haven't seen yet and you can see some of the work we've done.

Hey guys. Hope I didn't come off negative. Wasn't trying to downplay your guys' effort. Like I said, I love the spot and glad you guys put time into it. As far as the holds are concerned, I'm not surprised more stuff was coming off. It's been 10 years since i picked off the loose pieces on the lower half. And to be fair after the overhanging crux where you stand on the slab I just traversed onto the slab to the right and downclimbed.

I live in LA now but I'm in the area a lot. There's a lot of good rock patches with fun climbs all around. I'd love to meet up and spend an afternoon revisiting the rocks out there.

It's all good, man. We should probably re-climb some of those routes again to reassess them anyway. I only know of a couple people who have tried some of these problems and the ones you mentioned have only been sent by two or three people that I know of and everybody had different opinions about grades.

If you're in the area let me know. I'm really curious if there are routes that we've overlooked so far and would be neat to reminisce with someone whose climbed in the Menifee area. We just found 3 or 4 routes last week that were right in front of our faces. And I think this Thursday we are going to clean another line or two on the Thundercat.

I might be down there Sunday. I can probably round up some other people to climb as well. I stabbed my left hand at new jack city recently (don't ask) and severed a nerve so I prob can't do anything super super hard. I have a project Boulder on the backside of Steele valley that I haven't gotten on in a decade that I'd like to revisit sometime as well if you're interested in getting on it as well.
