Kama Bay, Lake Superior, Ice and Mixed Rock Climbing
James on 'easier' terrain, after the crux.
For ice and mixed routes, Kama Bay offers a bit more bang for the buck than it's nearby neighbor, Orient Bay. More Solitude, more beauty, more adventure. There's a price to be paid of course. Approaches tend to be longer, less traveled, and more involved. And the west-facing cliffs (and ice) of the Kama Hills can be mighty cold until late winter, when it finally starts warming up.
Domtar 81 road, about 20km east of Nipigon on Hwy 17, is the main access for Kama Bay routes. Although you will likely see Getting Oriented, Kama Curtains, or Icebreakers well before you come to the Domtar road turnoff, keep an eye out for the sign. Be advised that Domtar road supports active logging operations, so always be on the lookout for logging vehicles and parek as far off the road as possible. If the road isn't plowed, your approach just got longer!

Moderate classic at Kama Bay. Incredible climb. Can be done in either one or two (60m ropes required) pitches. The route consists of roughly two sections separated by a bowl/ledge in the middle. The first section can either be climbed diagonally up via the ramp system to the left (WI3+) or straight up (WI4+). From the bowl the ice steepens and checks in as WI4/4+ to the top. ...[more] Browse More Classics in International
