Kafka on the Shore Boulder from the river.

I found this boulder while scoping out fishing spots along the Big Thompson River. It's slightly overhung on great rock (quartzite?) and is maybe 12' at the tallest point. The landing is flat sand.

Bring a fishing pole, and relax on the sand, enjoying this beautiful spot!

When I found this boulder, it was dirty and lichen covered. I am not from the area and have no idea if this is a first ascent. For now I will assume so, but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Getting There

From Estes Park downtown, head east on US 34. Take this until you reach Estes Park Mountain Shop (on your right). At this point, reset your odometer and continue 9.8 miles in the direction of Drake. At 9.8 miles in, you will see a pullout on your right just before a left hand bend in the road marked with yellow directionals. Park in this pullout, and walk through rock and debris toward the water. Look for a round, white boulder with an angled face. The angled face is above a flat patch of sand.

Climbing Season

For the Big Thompson Canyon area.

Find the big, orangish face above sand. Start on sharp, half-pad underclings roughly 6 feet up. Step up and move into the large, obvious sidepull then up to a great sloper at the lip. Throw a heel hook. Work your way up until you can eventually grab a massive, incut jug in the rock that is not visible from the start. Mantel over. This is exciting and challenging the whole way through. When I found this boulder, it was dirty and lichen covered.
