I am visiting family in LA in October. While there I may have one day to climb in J Tree. I have never been there. I am a pretty new climber. I have followed up to 5.6 in the Gunks and led 5.3 once. I have climbed up to 5.7 on TR in the Gunks and Powerlinez in the north east.

I'd be looking to do 1 full day in Joshua Tree. I would probably get up very early, drive there, climb for the day, drive back to LAX and fly home to NJ that night. I think I'd like to do a full day with a guide as that would probably maximize my day I guess.

I was looking for some general recommendations on this plan. I have a trip scheduled with AAI in March next year so I could definitely use them but was looking for any other guide recommendations or recommendations on routes or this plan in general. It would be really cool to do a full day of some classic stuff within my ability. I don't need to lead - I am content to follow someone experienced for the day and maybe lead something easy if it makes sense to do so.

Thanks a lot.

Neils,

Hiring a guide for the day is your best bet. Try this guide service for Joshua Tree:

A friend hired Vertical Adventures when she was learning and had a good experience.

I'm also friends with the head of rockclimbeveryday.com, who guide in JTree and other SoCal parts. I'm sure they'd also provide a great experience.

Highly recommend vertical adventures. Ask for Eric Kramer-Webb. I have been guided by him before and he is super nice. He is a local and knows the area very well. He is happy to take you to some classic areas or show you some great climbs off the beaten path. DaEyeDoc

Unlikely that Bob will guide him - he only said he spoke with Bob!

I don't know for sure. They definitely have permits for some areas, since I know the Sierra Mountaineering Club was hoping to partner up with them because they have permits. But I climb socially with Olga and Carlos, so I've never had reason to ask about permits.

I suspect Bob won't be my guide but it would be awesome if he was. He was really pleasant on the phone and he takes great photos. I suspect I'll have a great time whoever the guide is. neils

Just wanted to follow up on this one if anyone is interested. I went out with Erik Kramer-Webb from vertical adventures yesterday and he was super cool. We did a bunch of climbs in the Hidden Valley and Turtle Rock area in the 5.4 - 5.8 range. Another area I don't remember the name of now. He gave me some good instruction especially on slab and crack I was not too familiar with. Great guy.

I met Bob Gaines earlier in the morning at the meeting spot and he was super nice and welcoming. He had some interesting stories to tell and it was cool to meet him in person. I recommend his company for sure.

Jtree is a super cool place. My climbing outside the Gunks is limited at this point (I've been a couple other places but nothing extensive) so it was really cool to spend a day somewhere else. I felt like I could climb there every day for more than a year and never repeat the same route :) Hopefully I'll get to go back some time. Next stop will be Vegas in March.
