BLM Managed Lands at Castle Rocks PERMANENTLY CLOSED TO CLIMBING!! Castle Rocks State Park lands are OPEN TO CLIMBING MORE INFO >>>

Area Description

A tribute crag to one of the greatest, most influential, singer-song writers of our time, Johnny Cash. Unlike Johnny Cash this crag is small, however what it lacks in size, it makes up for in quality. Chock full of stars, this blob of rock is an intermediate crag-seekers dream. Mixed routes and climbing, bring a light rack and draws. Look for the dome of rock in an open field northwest of Castle Rock.

Routes include:

1) Man in Black 5.9
2) Walk the Line 5.8
3) Ring of Fire 5.11c
4) Cash Crack 5.8
5) Country Trash 5.8
6) Five Feet High and Rising 5.9
7) Pepper Sprout 5.6

Walk north/west of Castle Rock using the main trail that skirts Castle Rock. Look for the small, random outcroppings.

Trickier than it looks. Thin moves followed by jugs. Climb past chains if TR'ing Ring Of Fire is desired....[more]   Browse More Classics in Idaho

In the area known as, "The Back Yard Boulders" (which includes Johnny Cash and Beef Butte). Approach from the Castle Rock loop trail, and follow the old road which diagonals away from Castle Rock in a northwest direction. Johnny Cash and Beef Butte are just to the left (west) of the road.

I don't think anyone ever used the word "Memorial" for the "Johnny Cash" area.
