One climber's alpine wilderness adventure is another's chosspile of collapsing volcanic slag. Even were it next to a major highway close to a city, this wouldn't see all that much action.

J.D. (Jack Daniels is apparently stuck in my head) is a visually scenic peak, and surrounded by horizons of similar jagged non-granitic ridges for the very reason it's not very appealing to climbers - it's made of very different (and lower quality) rock than usual.

Getting There

Take the pack trail from Blue Lake Road southeast to the saddle west of the summit block, passing above a treeline of Lodgepole Pine woodlands to sagebrush plains. There, follow use trails, cairns, or just your own instinct to the peak itself.

I called it easy 5th because there were a couple of distinctly climbingish moves on it that a scrambler wouldn't usually encounter (at the chimney, and especially starting the downclimb from the top). If using a rope, the summit route breaks naturally into two short pitches....[more]   Browse More Classics in California
