Description

Better known for its canoe waters, this area lacks major climbing destinations. But it is not entirely devoid of possibility: slabs and small crags poke up through the wilderness, adding variety to canoe camping or backpacking trips. Many of these require extensive paddling or long hikes to reach.
Isolation, solitude, and uncertainty are part of the fun of this region. Expect to be on your own, and carry the necessary tools and skills to handle that isolation.

Getting There

Route 30 is the main highway running up the eastern edge of this region. Route 3 runs along the Northern boundary. No major (or minor!) roads breach the central area.

With a threesome, what was the third wheel to do while his friends climbed the crack line to the right? Why, solo up the clean slab to its left, of course. No need to change shoes - or even drop the pack - Tom Lane just waltzed up to the top of the open rock to await our arrival. It's really too bad that Coney's slopes aren't steeper, because its rock is incredibly grippy. The end of open rock leaves you still well below the summit; you have to scramble up dirty blocks, gullies, and minu...[more]   Browse More Classics in New York
