I am learning to climb trad and was just curious, if I practice placing gear on sport routes between bolts, does it still count as redpoint if I send?

If you climbed it without weighting the rope it is a redpoint

I'm going to hazard a guess that over 70% of sport routes in the US have at least one place on them to place gear that would hold a fall.

Is this question for real?

If you drive 65mph in a 55mph zone is it speeding?

If it is on a Tuesday and you scratch your left ear before you place the gear, then yes, it is a redpoint. On all other days you have to just have to place all the gear with your left hand and bark like a dog at the end of each pitch.

I hope not because sometimes that's the only way I get propelled up routes.

You guys are funny. If you're leading, and don't fall or use the rope or pull on the gear, of course it's a red point. But if you've already placed the pro and are just clipping it on the way up, it's a pink point. And if you use a knee bar rest anywhere on the route, it's a magenta point. And if you think my response is lame, that's a valid point.

I think placing gear on sport routes is a great idea if you're trying to learn trad. But that's beside the point.

It's not a redpoint unless you write a letter to the route opener and give him the chance to explain why he didn't put the bolts where you wanted them.

Guideline #1: Don't be a jerk.
