The tallest peak in the Cordillera Real Mountains. Experiences some surprisingly good weather for it's height but is still a 6,000 m peak and offers everything that comes with that prestigious title.

Getting There

The approach is a little hazy, could use some help here. We drove from La Paz for 4-5 hours and parked at a farm at the base. Hiked for several miles to a base camp at around 14,000 ft.

Illimani is not a technical mountaineering route - it features a pretty straightforward series of switchbacks to the top. But, I found it to be a slightly harder climb than Huayna Potosi purely due to the much higher elevation and the fact that the rout is very steep and unrelenting.

Other than that it's an amazing place. Used
