Ice tool modification

So, I recently bought a pair of Grivel Monsters, and they are great so far, except that the secondary and tertiary grips are very uncomfortable.

As you can see, they are very skinny, and quite honestly, are painful to hold. I am thinking of beefing up the top grips somehow. I was thinking some epoxy, or possibly even making a wood handle. Has anyone done this with ice tools? If so, what did you use?

I LOVE my Monsters. The rubber grippies that came with them fall off easily, so I taped them on. Thin foam glued down with shoe goo, and a tape job to cover does just fine. Best inexpensive tools out there for steep ice.

Buy the rubber things that go all the way up, then tape the hell out of them, add a few strips of thin foam for insulating and retape for more comfort.

Go to your local bike shop and purchase some cork handlebar tape. Wrap the handles in this.
It's durable, maulable and insulates so you can climb with thin gloves and not have cold hands.

I'm going to bump this thread incase anyone has any new ideas. I have the rubber things for the handle, and tried wrapping them up in lots of tape, but I still think the handle is uncomfortable. It would be nice if I could figure out some way to make these feel better.

Wrap the handles in something tough, perhaps bike chainstay wrap, then wrap the entire thing again in Scotch 2228 Rubber Mastic. It is extremely tacky even when wet and widely used for wrapping ice tool handles. I have it on the handles of all my tools. Keep it mind that it sticks to EVERYTHING, especially itself. I ruined my first wrap job when I laid the 2 freshly wrapped tools down on top of each other and had to cut them apart, discard the wasted tape, and then re-wrap.

I've seen guys make wooden pieces to thicken up the handle. WOrked well, but its weight vs comfort.
