Ice Screw Holder - DIY with free sketch

Owning a basic sewing machine I felt that purchasing a screw holder was asinine so I searched the internet and reviewed the ones people had made and then designed my own. I used the same material as BD which is a 420d pack cloth and purchased it from an online fabric company called rockywoods.com. There are many other materials and sources based on your needs.
I considered making it out of vinyl but the weight was a bit high for longer approaches or the backcountry so I stayed with 420d packcloth as it is still durable for its weight.

Here is the sketch should you want to do your own:

Is this just for loading in your pack, or does it attach to your harness for the climb too? Just wondered.

I'd be super sketched out climbing with my screws racked like this woodchuck! I'm assuming it's just for your pack. Nothing like all your screws falling off your harness after sitting down at the belay :)

These roll-up are NOT for racking; just for carrying screws in the pack to keep them from getting dinged and from stabbing your puffy etc.

This is what I use, and I can't think of a better option. Holds 12 screws or even 14 if you put your stubbies in the center pocket.

Get in touch with Conrad Anker, I bought mine directly from him. You can find his email on his website.

I have the old BD zip up 'briefcase' with a shoulder strap to carry, that has 10 screw sleeves just like that inside, plus tons of pockets and loops for 2 pair of crampons, and at least 4 ice tools all packed inside. Too big to put in your pack, but carries nicely in the car to unload what you need for the day instead of loose gear all over the car or stuffed in a plastic bin full of metal tools.

i picked up one of these:

amazon.com/dp/B00ES8L3UG/re…

which works really well for storage and transport to and from the craig. also a very cheap solution.

maybe I'm mistaken, but the BD version is just $10, right?

the bd version is $19.99 MSRP and only holds six screws. mine has 10 screws and a file with room to spare.

Nice. Like yours much better.

That seems like a lot for the BD sleeve -- I hope that's not what I paid years ago!

Did you have any trouble with the sewing machine? I had to enlist the help of a much more experienced seamstress to help me make mine. I understand the concept of how the machine works, but finding the proper needle/using the right technique, etc was tough.

Cool to see all the pics of homemade gear!

One question though, I notice in several of the pics the screws still have the grey plastic mesh things on them inside the screw holders. Isn't the point of the screw holder that you can protect your screws and not have to keep track of those mesh pieces and the little rubber caps?

You obviously don't climb with the OCD crowd.

That's actually not my picture, I think it is Mark Smiley's. I don't put the sleeves or screw caps on my screws when they are in the case (or ever).

I just took a spiral rope protector that someone gave me for free and cut it down to wrap the screws. Very light and easy to get on and off.
