Hurd Lake is a beautiful place to climb and hang out. Granite is amazing and there's a few choice climbs to be had!

Getting There

Hurd Lake is a jewel of the canyon, one that is rarely visited, in spite of its proximity to the South Lake Trail Head. At a leisurely pace, it takes me about 40 minutes (1.3 miles) to hike to Hurd Lake.
Drive 168 past the Buttermilks heading towards South Lake. Make a left turn at the South Lake exit and drive all the way to the South Lake parking Lot. Hurd Lake is accessed by following the (Bishop Pass Trail Head) as it winds along the East shore of South Lake. You will hit a sign that welcomes you to the John Muir Wilderness. The trail will turn south-east and you will come to a trail junction. To the right is the Treasure Lake Trail and to the left is the Bishop Pass Trail. Go toward Bishop Pass. You will pass a sign reading (Lake Mary Louise) you are getting close! Once you hit Hurd Lake you will notice a long granite wall to your right. There is a climbers trail down to Hurd lake that splits(right) and heads down the hill, take that! Or fallow the granite on your right downhill and you will also find the boulders.

This line lives up to its name, once you start pulling you realize your in for some serious burn. Start with left hand on the chest high diagonal crimp rail and right hand low on the good side pull. Use fancy footwork to get through the bottom and towards a higher right hand sidepull/undercling. Once established get ready for a huge lock off reach (which if your short this will feel like V8 or possibly harder)...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
