I recently picked up three hooks a BD Talon, Cliffhanger, and Grappling Hook and I am wondering about sewing slings instead of knotting them. I noticed that Petzl hooks come with sewn slings while most pictures I have seen of BD hooks show knotted slings with the knot on the outside. It seems like the knot may change the direction of pull, but I may be wrong. Does a knotted sling have an advantage over a sewn sling?
Yes. The knot on the outside helps to force the bottom of the hook into the rock, helping stabilize the whole affair. Even sewn ones can have this property if they are slung correctly, like this Petzl:
[Edit to add: although I prefer the sling on the inside of the hook for aforementioned stability]
