High tor is a jagged peak at the very norther border of New City, NY. The park has 690 acres, and plenty of hiking. The park also has a lot of history. From the peak, you get clear views of Haverstraw, Harriman State Park, and New York City.

High tor also has many climbing spots. Around the park, you can find many great boulders and cliffs. This area has been very rarely climbed yet, so there are many new routes to be found. Many of the good climbs in this park are a bit off trail so a GPS is recommended.

If climbing in this area, please be respectful to the park. Please carry out your trash and be respectful to the wild life. Try to leave the park the way you found it. Finally, be very careful with the placement of any trad gear as the rock is not the best quality.

Getting There

The best way to enter the park for most climbs is through the trail head at the top of Old Route 304. Park on the grassy area at the corner of Old Route 304 and Ridge Road and walk 100 feet down Old Route 304 to the trail head which is just past the power line cut. The trail is marked with aqua blazes. Most climbs in the park are anywhere between a half a mile to a 2 mile hike from this entrance point. If you are climbing more on the western side of the park, it would be best to enter the park via the main entrance off of South Mountain Road.

Start with both hands on the underling, move up to the good ledge, and then to the sloper at the top or you can also try to land a small crimp that is just behind the sloper. After topping out, just walk off the back of the boulder....[more]   Browse More Classics in New York

Be careful climbing here. High Tor State Park is managed by the PIPC which doesn't allow climbing except at the Powerlinez and the Gunks. This area is pretty chossy and pretty much only known by local high schoolers as a smoke spot.
