West facing; often quite windy for the area.

Remember to keep your activity as low impact as possible: this area has been sensitive in the past, but it seems that Hidden has been awaiting some new activity for some time, as long as it is all conducted in a respectful, conscious manner.

Getting There

Starting from the large gravel parking lot, which holds appx. 10 cars, get on main trail, which parallels the road (heading back the way you came in; there's only one direction on the main NFS trail from the lot). Trail meets a drainage, which leads to right hand turnoffs to Lower Hidden and Hidden Cracks (at about 15 and 20 minute total hike times respectively). Don't take these turns (I believe they're marked with carins). Stay in drainage passing multiple small waterfalls/creek crossings (a large cliff will eventually be visible to your right). These may start to get pretty high in the spring. Look for another carin, which marks a faint trail to the large cliff (Hidden Roofs). The roofs will be visible momentarily.

The hike is beautiful. Appx. 35-40 min. total approach time.

Climb easy trad up the broken crack system leading to the left side of the large roof. Traverse right to the first bolt and climb straight out the near-horizontal roof. I invested over 50 attempts for the send on this beautiful line, which feels about as hard as my method on Cartography (Long Branch of Smoke Hole, WV), but is probably less my "style". I'm proposing 5.13d, though will leave things a bit more vague at 13+ in case someone sees something I didn't, and because grades don't make any s...[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
