Description Suggest change

A beautiful bouldering area located in the Gallatin Range near Big Sky. The boulders in this area tend to be well featured gneiss blocks that are just a pleasure to climb on.

The Portal Creek road has seasonal closures so Hidden Lakes is open from mid-June to 12/01. Find more information on the National Forest Service website.

Getting There Suggest change

From Bozeman, head south on 191 toward Big Sky. Turn left onto Portal Creek Road and take this dirt road roughly 6.5 miles to the Hidden Lakes Trailhead (a popular trail).

To approach the main areas: Follow the trail through a series of steep switchbacks for about a mile. The trail will flatten out for a while. About another mile down trail there will be a fork. Take the left trail at this fork. Follow this trail slightly uphill until you gain a ridge line in the trees. Continue until you see a big gully heading down to the right with boulders at the bottom of it. This is District 1.

Note: The approach to the D1 boulders is quite easy and should take about 45 minutes to an hour depending on fitness.
