Description

This large boulder sits above the equestrian trail, on the hillside a few hundred yards south of Big Rock. The walls are northwest facing and south facing, with four bolted lines and several TR problems. The composite of the rock is the same as Big Rock but the climbs are more about balance and traditional face holds, with little smearing. One nice departure from other climbs in the area, this boulder has a nice, fractured patina covering the upper section, just past the crux of most of the climbs. The hard routes are on the northwest face and west prow, "protected" with manky bolts. The moderates are on the south face and well-protected with new bolts and a great two-bolt rap anchor.

Getting There

To reach the Helios Boulder (clearly visible from the open area in front of Big Rock) follow the equestrian/hiking trail on the west side of the valley, up into the hills to the south. Cross three modern wood bridges (thank you Boy Scouts) and pass a park bench. At the last hairpin turn before the summit ridge, follow the faint trail left and up to the base of the boulder. Allow five minutes easy hiking from the base of Big Rock.

Start as for the bolted line on the left side of the face, but move up and left from the first bolt, through an improbable-looking series of small edges and smears. Reach the patina at its far left side, just to the right of the second rusty old bolt of the west prow. Continue climbing the left edge of the patina to the bolted rap anchor. Rappel to descend....[more]   Browse More Classics in California
