BETA PHOTO: Looking up at heart rock from the road.

This area is located on private property.

Heart Rock is the first big conglomerate formation in the canyon, appearing on the north side of the road. The large overhanging arete that forms its south face is in the shape of a giant heart. Changing the Stripes ascends a major arete a stone's throw to the southwest of Heart Rock proper. This is an area that sees relatively little climbing traffic, but holds a few adventure climbing gems.

Getting There

Park at a pullout on the north side of the road approximately 0.5 miles from the mouth of the canyon, and 200-300 yards below Anti-Gravity Rock.
Some bushwhacking is required to approach any of the routes; you may choose to follow the approaches outlined in route descriptions or to make your own way. Plan on 10-15 minutes or less to approach.

Tachycardia ascends the most obvious weaknesses in the south face and headwall of Heart Rock. With the brief exception of the crux sequence, it stays on vertical and less-than vertical terrain for its entirety. The route is a multi-pitch adventure offering some of the most breathtaking exposure that can be had for the grade in Maple. Pitch 1 (Vena Cava): Climb directly up the toe of Heart Rock through great jugs and big cobbles. Belay at a sloping ledge with two bolts. 30 meters, 5.5.Pitch 2 (Th...[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah

I am a member of the local Search and Rescue team. Last summer we had two rescues on Heart Rock. Both parties were rappelling and would have self-rescued if they were prepared to ascend their ropes. (Great thing to learn!) Be careful where you throw your rope here: one had the end-knot caught in a crack and the other threw the rope down the wrong (higher) side of the lowest rappel.

Be safe out there and have fun!
