Hawke Hill Ecological Reserve, with out of the fog...

MORE INFO >>>

Description

Hawke Hill Ecological Reserve protects a variety of arctic-alpine plants that are rarely encountered in North America this far east and south. The area can, in fact, be called the most easterly alpine barrens in North America.

The reserve is often covered by cold fog moving in off the Atlantic. Its elevation and weather conditions keep the area cool even in summer, which is why the arctic-alpine plants are able to survive here.

It is also home to a few boulders. Despite being located near Mandolin, Barrens and others, the Hawke Hill Reserve is considerably colder. It is definitely a late spring early summer location. In contrast, the other climbs in the areas can be a bit hot and humid in summer months.

Getting There

From St. john's drive West to Salmonier line. Get off highway get back on right away to come back to wards st. johns. There is a gravel road on the right hand side that leads up a hill to a communication station.

GPS coordinates are included in the map.
