Hawaii Overview

Most of the established climbing in Hawaii is located on Oahu and Maui. Oahu has about 150 sport and trad climbs and about 250 boulder problems. Maui has about 50 sport climbs and a few bouldering areas. Climbing on Maui is still somewhat new, but the developers have been hard at work establishing new lines monthly.

The other islands have limited to no established climbing.

This is THE 5.12 testpiece in the state of Hawaii. This route is quite sustained and technical, making for an good adventure and very hard onsight. The main crux is between the fourth and fifth bolt which involves sustained 5.12 climbing on delicate and desperate crimps and two difficult clips through the crux. Pull the crux above the 4th bolt and continue on easier but still sustained and pumpy terrain to the top where you get to fight one last crux right before the anchors. How do I add a new area for Hawaii?

Because someone put routes under Hawaii rather than under an area under Hawaii, that made Hawaii a crag, not and area- so the DB is out of whack.

Write the area admin and have them put a TBD area in to move the routes under, then Hawaii will become an area with sub-areas (like Islands and then crags) to be added as per your wish.

In this case, it's Andy Laakman. I've sent him a note.

Hey guys,

I notice that the Big Island has a lot less development than some of the other islands. Can someone let me know if that is just because no one is posting about it or due to lack of rock? I'm considering moving there but the decision rests heavily upon me being able to dance on rocks. I don't need to know specifics, I just need to know if the potential is there. Thanks!

There is no development there mostly due to a lack of rock. If you are a serious climber, the Big Island is not the place for you.
