Description

The Haihte Range is located at the south end of Woss Lake overlooking the west coast communities of Tahsis and Zeballos. The range is home to what at least were the largest remaining glaciers on Vancouver Island. T

he range runs in a single arcing ridge system bounding the Nomash River valley to its southwest and the the Kaipit and Woss Lake watersheds to the northeast. The jagged spires along the main ridge offer some superb alpine climbing and the lower glacier shelves have superb high terrain for ski touring including some long aesthetic descent lines.

The part of the range to the north of the height of land i.e.: the Woss Lake side including the glacier shelves, is within Woss Lake Provincial Park. The faces to the west i.e.: above the Nomash River, fall outside the park boundary.

Getting There

From either Tahsis or Woss Lake but the most popular access is from the logging road in the Nomash River valley. From Highway 19 north of Woss, take the Zeballos Road south. Just outside the town of Zeballos take a major left hand turn into the Nomash and follow this road. A pullout in the alders marks the start of the old road spur N20 that has been kept clear as a trail. This leads up to the Nathan Creek Col a main base for exploring the Haihte Range.
