GriGri Concern?

I was out climbing with a friend today when my grigri 2 pulled a manuever I've never seen before. Below is a description of what happened as well as a photo of the situation I re-created at home.

I was standing pretty far away from the base of the wall as I belayed my partner on a top rope climb. My partner fell and the cam on the grigri engaged however the load strand of the rope (the one going up through the anchor and down to the climber) got pinched between the grigri cam and grigri body. See photo for clarification.

Load strand of rope pinched between cam and body of grigri.

With the rope pinched, I couldn't take up or feed any slack. Luckily I was able to manhandle the rope with the cam engaged to get the load strand back to where it should be without any mishaps however it was a bit concerning.

I'm not sure if this has anything to do with the belayer standing out away from the wall or not. Have you ever had this happen before? Any thoughts/concerns?

Yeah, it's a thing that happens. Just put the rope back in place and you're good.

Question: did you have your biner on your belay loop or tie-in points?

The only time I've seen this was when the belayer hooked the Grigri (v1) in upside down causing it to twist around when holding the climber. The rope was pointing all the way to the left (referencing your picture) perpendicular to where it should have been.

The grigri was clipped in properly (right side up) into my belay loop.

This was part of the original extended manual that you're cautioned to read before using that device. Included in that document are some failure modes you might not be aware of. Be safe out there.

Thanks for the Petzl link.
