Peek-a-boo - take care on the approach.

Description

The Grey Towers are located above and right of the obvious Pink Band (Mayfield Canyon Towers) in the center of the Wheeler Crest. These towers are characterized by rounded and smooth blank faces occasionally broken by discontinuous crack systems. Steep slabs of high-quality granite soar to heights of over a thousand feet. From US 395 they don't look like much when surrounded by the vastness of the entirety of the Wheeler Crest, but as you approach them the size and scale of these beautiful pinnacles becomes apparent.

Getting There

Mayfield Canyon approach. Behind the Pink Band. Allow 1.5 - 3 hours, around 3,000 feet of elevation gain. No trail.

Hidden from sight in a narrow gully behind the Cobblers Bench, the Super Grey Pinnacle is the largest monolithic tower on the Wheeler Crest. The first ascent of this formation was made over a 2-day period in marginal weather conditions, which included a rain-and-snow storm during the summit push. The route features superb slab and knobby face climbing, classic cracks, and airy dike traverses - all on immaculate rock. This climb ranks amongst the best I’ve done in the massif, and in my partners...[more]   Browse More Classics in CA
