Entering Green Canyon from the Southwest.

Description

Green Canyon is one of the prettiest limestone climbing destinations in the state. The area has over (40) developed routes ranging from 5.4 to 5.12b. Most are bolted sport or mixed routes but a few full trad routes exist.

Camping can be found close by off of Pasture Gulch road. There is a small stream that runs along the trail to the crag, but it is more of a trickle then a true water source during the summer.

Ron Brunckhorst's printed guide "The Big Empty" is a must have to fully enjoy the area. It has great hand drawn maps and full route descriptions including interesting tid-bits regarding the history of development.

Getting There

East of White Sulphur Springs on US-12 find Pasture Gulch Road between mile marker 68 and 69. Head south along a Forrest Service road through private property until you reach a Y intersection, head left to the east on Pasture Gulch. Shortly there after you will reach a second Y. Head left again switch backing to the north then south. You will come to a USFS access gate that is locked from Sept 1 to Dec 1 during MT's long hunting seasons. From here drive or walk (3) miles south to a wide right turn in the road. You will see a two-track trail heading up hill to the SE through a clear cut. Park here and begin the (1) mile walk to the crag. As you crest the hill you will see the limestone below through the trees to the NE. Stay on the 2-track as it continues down hill to the SE then turns NE. It will follow a small stream for a short ways. The 2-track will take you directly to the rock.

When I saw the route's name was the same as the title of the Guide Book that brought us to this canyon, we had to do it.For the grade and the area its a classic. Sustained moderate face climbing with great feet for the first section with the use of the crack on your left. At the bush in the middle a large crack heads up to the right but to stay on route you need to head left and up.The crack and di-hedral it follows to the left has a few loose spots so watch what you pull o...[more]   Browse More Classics in Montana
