Government Bay in Crane Lake holds a great wall with potential for a dozen or so routes.

For the past few years, I've zipped past this tiny wall just gazing around at the beautiful lake while Jeff Engel boated me into Canada. Then one day in the summer of 2015, I swam to this wall from the campsite at Picnic Beach and realized how wonderful it could be.

A canoe ride with some trad gear led to the discovery of Papaya?Banana! and spending time hanging on that route led to the discovery of the gem, Blueberry Fortress.

Getting There

Boat to the wall or hike in off of Nelson's Trail starting at Nelson's Resort.

While trying to recover some gear I left on Papaya?Banana!, I began to see holds in this angled line to my right. The undercling at the final roof drew me in and the rest of it never let go.Start on the shelf beyond the large detached rock at the left side of Government Bay wall. Do a traverse to a side pull to some crimps under a roof. Pull the roof and immediately mantle to a great resting stance. Then, gam...[more]   Browse More Classics in Minnesota
