Description

One of the spurs of the Furkapass ridge, Gletschorn provides some ’Plaisir’ climbing over the Tiefengletscher with a nice view of Galenstock. The other route of note on here is Enfer Doux, a 6-pitch 5c+ from Frères Remy, and a long, easy climb up the south ridge. Gets sun from 11am on.

Getting There

Same approach as for Graue Wand, but keep hiking up and west. Two monster steinmann (cairns) mark the pass over to the glacier (with the sudgrat route starting on the pass). Hike up the glacier another 30 min to the base of Gletschorn. Crampons would be useful, axe recommended.

Jürg von Känel and co. worked hard to make a route of sustained difficulty – the route avoids weaknesses in the cliff and follows a line of strength, with several pitches leaving crack systems to go over bolted faces, a peculiar but enjoyable way of making a route. Finger crack on P3 is a real highlight.P1 7a (6b, 2 p.a.) Start not in the obvious right-leaning crack but instead on a blank face. With glacial retreat and low summer snow, a little of unprotected climbing over the bergschrund is ...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
