Hey all...Flying out to Durango on 1/5 for the festival, and just looking for some tips I guess. First, Is hitchhiking legal in CO? yes...im serious.... Second, while actually in durango, is stuff typically within walking distance? Im thinking its not, but figured I would ask. I mean withing a reasonable distance, not like 5 miles for a burger. lol. Any public transportation? Obviously, I've never been to Colorado, let alone Ouray or Durango, and Im just curious. If I sound like a dirtbag, well, its because I dont have much money right now aside from for my flight, so I guess for the time being, I am a dirtbag. Anywhere to camp out around the festival? for free?

Thanks in advance everyone!!

Once in downtown Durango everything is in walking distance, not exactly sure where the airport is though? Hitchhiking to Ouray shouldn't be too hard, the only thing is that if you do end up waiting a while for a ride it could get pretty cold. But, there's only one road between the two so it should be pretty easy. There's free camping in Ouray, but it's about two miles up the Camp Bird Road and is in the shade pretty much all day. Maybe try to find some people and chip in for a room, definitely worth it seeing as everything gets wet when climbing. Plus, the last thing you want to do after a great day, then night of merriment is to have to hike two + miles in the dark to your cold tent!
Good luck.

Generally not a big deal to hitch. In the winter you'll have company, with folks hitching up to the ski hill. Usually easy to get a ride to Purgatory, then Silverton from there, then Ouray. While most folks that'll pick you up are chill, remember that this is still generally rural and standard hitching protocols apply (ass, grass, or cash - if ya don't get my drift). Yeah, Dgo airport is a while south of town, so be prepared to pay a cab/shuttle. flydurango.com/shuttles_tax… . Usually during the fest, you'll be able to find some floor space to share. I'd post up here to find some folks for that. Otherwise, campin' out is going to put a damper on things... Ouray is about 1/2 mile long, so walking is not a big deal, but getting there should be fun.

Like everyone has said, the crux will be getting to D-town from the airport, but you can probably find people at the airport. Durango is small, and you can walk anywhere in town to downtown to party...a few miles tops. The hitch to ouray can take a few days sometimes depending on the time of winter. There are a lot of B.C. skiiers up there that will get you through segments...ass grass or cash. There are some wood sheds you can stay at in Ouray for like 20$ a night with bunk beds. They are spartan, but have heat, and that is where i have stayed in the past. It can be -20 or -30 out at night in the winter up the canyons, and lots of days of that get old real quick when town is right there. If that is what you are going to do, build a basass snowcave.
Cheers,
Nick
