BETA PHOTO: The wildlife tunnel; bring a headlamp!

Description

Small (~half dozen routes), south-facing freeway-side crag sporting Index-like fine-grained granite in a secluded yet noisy setting. Mix of cracks, bolts, and bolted flaring cracks. Likely wet most of the year, but a good place to check out if you are in the area and/or want to beat the crowds at the other North Bend exits.

Getting There

Traveling from the west, take Exit 47 off I-90. Turn left at the junction from the off ramp, then right at the T intersection (onto NF-9034). Drive for a minute and turn left at the first opportunity (NF-5800). Pass some private property on the right which boasts firewood for sale and keep a sharp eye out on the left for a tunnel under the freeway (you can also see the rock through the trees on the other side of I-90). After you spot the tunnel and the rock, find a place to park off the road and walk back to and through the tunnel. Fun Forest is immediately beyond the wildlife tunnel under the freeway. Approach time ~ 3 minutes.

Anyone know what the two bolted cracks directly in front of you when you approach from the tunnel are? They share same start, then one goes left, one right.

I don't have a copy with me to check, but I thought that most of the routes here are in Darryl Cramer's "Sky Valley Rock" (even though this is not Skykomish Valley).

I'll be able to check my copy in about a month. In the meantime, see if you can find a copy, and tell me if I'm imagining things...

Jon, is there any chance you ever checked "Sky Valley Rock"? I've never been able to find a copy of that guide, and i would appreciate more info on this area as it is a cool little spot.

Oh my, I completely forgot, sorry. But once again, I am away from my copy...this time until July 18. I just made a note to myself to check it then.

Update:
There are two right-facing crack-shallow corners, somewhat right-trending on the left half of the crag. The left one is "The mystical garden of free-wheeling animals" 11b, and the right one is "Flight to Mars" 11b.

About midway up 'Mystical', the route veers a little left, while the crack system goes right. Maybe this is what Pawel was asking about.

It has been about 35 years since I did these routes, so I can't recall much. Somewhere, I have a pic of me leading the former route. If I find it, I'll post.

But maybe I'll just head out there soon. With a refreshed memory and fresh pics, I'd feel more confident about posting the routes.

i did mystical, maybe a month or so ago and it is all bolts now. good route with some funky planar liebacking...

i also TR'd mars, but IIRC the upper part was insanely dirty, wet, and mossy.

Headed up to fun Forest yesterday. A very unfriendly local told me there is no parking anywhere on the road, and I would be towed. He basically said leave the area, and I didn't want any trouble so I just went to exit 38.

Kyle, I was out there last summer and a local asked us to park north of the bridge about a mile past the trail to the tunnel. Looks like you hit USFS land just before getting to the bridge.

Watch out for a wasps next inside the tree roots that are shaped like a bench in between left crack (bolt crack) and boots in the snow. Sat on it, hives all over, no fun :(((
