Fruit Boot Construction
What stiff high top shoe would you recommend for bolting on BD raptor crampons for the use in hard mixed routes and competition? A lot of the shoes seem to be no longer made |
I think scarpa still makes a fruit specific boot, but retail they're like 500$! |
I was thinking about stiff, high top rock shoes that I could bolt raptors too. |
I know of at least one OG out here who bolted pons onto a pair of cycling shoes to great effect. 'Bolted' might not even be the right verb, but yeah, cycling shoes. You could look into that, too. |
Ive thought about cycling shoes... or even a high top football cleat... to answer the question, maybe the evolv astromans |
Ya they are such an odd niche |
Dana, what size do you wear? |
41 in most la sportiva boots, 9 in running shoes and 39.5 in rock shoes |
Ah, IME in NH has a couple pairs but not quite that small. |
Hockey skates |
If you find a pair of kicks you like, I have a set of bolt on Raptors (pre SS) for sale. $100 bucks shipped, and in brand new condition. |
Looks like bike shoes or figure skates are what most people use... good to know |
Has anyone tried the Scarpa Rebel Ice fit? I'm a 40.5 in most of Scarpa's boots. |
yes, They are snug and almost a pain to get on, but once on, Like Butta! |
Has anyone looked into using rollerblades? They are very stiff, high topped, and you can potentially replace the softboot with something more insulated. Granted, not as light as bike shoes. |
Add 2 M grades for the rollerblade send, but only 1 if you use the rubber heel brake as a heel spur. Oh you meant without the wheels... |
Ha, yes. Lop off the wheels and the casing that holds them. |
well if anyone is selling a pair, I'm in the market of 40.5-41 |

An old pair of 3 season mountaineering boots works well, like a blown out pair or Rebel GTX Carbons. Cut the lugs off the sole with a sharp knife and bolt the crampon directly to the boot. Screw a link bar from a pair of crampons to the bottom for added stiffness if necessary. |
How about a pair of these with a CF or other rigid plank under the insole or on the bottom? |
