Description

Fish Canyon Narrows is a canyon just past the abandoned Cienega Campground north east of Castaic Lake, CA.

The rock on the hike in is a conglomerate of carying quality which transitions to polished hard choss.

The area requires a sizable hike so it doesn't get climbed often.

Getting There

Take the 5 freeway north past Castaic and exit Templin Highway turning right and heading east.

Follow the road until it ends at a barricade. The area is popular with hikers and many cars are here.

Follow the dirt road over the bridge heading south until you come to a split in the road. Turn left at this split and head up the canyon. Going straight takes you to private property and the water control for Castaic Lake.

Follow the dirt road through a conglomerate rock narrows. This area has many boulering opportunities. Past the narrows continue until you come upon an abandoned campground last open in the 70's (Cienega CG).

Just past the CG is a small canyon on your left. Follow the obvious trail until you reach the Fish Canyon Narrows Proper. You are here.

Poison oak is everywhere careful hiking is required to avoid it.

Remote adventure climbing for choss lovers:The climb starts 15 feet below a railroad spike on a scree pile. Scramble up to the first railroad spike and then traverse right with good hand holds until you see the obvious second railroad spike above you. Going up yields a railroad spike and a bolt. Once you pass both you'll gain a nice depression/pocket which makes for a good resting stance. Place a piece and traverse back left where the rock type changes. As you traverse to it ...[more]   Browse More Classics in California

Cienega Campground was closed in 2004/2005 when the heavy rains brought by El Nino washed out the roads going in and the government abandoned care.

Locals were visiting the campground in the early 60's so it is surmised that the campground was built during the depression which matches the bridge dates along the local San Francisquito Canyon Road and Lake Hughes Road.

This also matches the timeline of the pitons placed (1960's). The french pitons used on the first ascent would have been the best at that time compared to the WWII pitons available in the 50's.

Fish Canyon Narrows is a adventurous long walk for some so so rock and not so memorable climbing in a narrow canyon with an intermittent stream. The hike to the abandoned Cienega Campground is 2.7 miles. It's at least another 2 miles to the Narrows. Not as popular with hikers and walkers as indicated, but in October when hunting season opens wear something orange or red. Careful of poison oak, numerous No Trespassing signs, and don't get caught in that canyon with rain imminent.
