The Fat Albert area is readily identified from the highway by finding the huge natural arch just left of center on Lightning Dome. It lies directly uphill from the main parking pullout.

Getting There

Park at a large pullout at mile 21.1. Cross the highway to a road cut and scramble up a left trending ramp to the trail. Follow this to the base of the wall near the Fat Albert arch. Expect a 10 minute hike.

All single pitch routes can be descended with one 30M rappel over the arch or scrambled off to the right on exposed ledges. Multipitch routes should rappel “Cretin’s Corner” with two ropes.

Climbing Season

For the West Idaho area.

Long known as “Fat Albert” this route was originally called Exfoliation Expressway. Either way this is the most classic and unique climb on the Clearwater. This good beginner’s lead follows a clean dihedral for about 25 meters before tunneling underneath a natural arch to the belay. Don’t miss it! It is nearly impossible to top rope this route since lowering through the arch isn’t easily accomplished and the pendulum is nasty!P1) Start up the low angle corner using hand jams (superb!) ...[more]   Browse More Classics in Idaho

Fat Albert :
Watch out for prickers in the beginning and nine bark at the end- it's a bit overgrown.
Great route to take sequence shot of your partner.
