Description

Climbs in this area are north of Ross Lake but south of Dubois. This is where the spine of the Winds drops below treeline for the first time since Sweetwater Gap on the southern end of the range.

Alpine climbing in this region is obscure. There is a significant amount of sport climbing in the upper Torrey Valley (see Trail Lake Pinnacle etc.).

Getting There

Most of the area is approached by driving County Road 411 (Trail Lake Road) from U.S. 287.

Trail Lake Road passes through private property on an easement along Torrey and Ring Lakes--stay on the road and GO SLOWLY to avoid hitting open range loose stock!!

Additionally, public boat access to Torrey Lake at the boat ramp is on a goodwill basis, so respect this private property. There is no public access to Torrey Creek in this area or to the head of Torrey Lake. There is a public campground at the head of Ring Lake.

Depending on the climb, approach by backpacking or driving. Most backpacking routes are not covered in the guidebooks this far north. Expect solitude, wildlife, bushwhacking, and mosquitos.
