Description

Fairview Mountain is located near the town of Apple Valley and has some very fun climbing in a beautiful and secluded environment. The area is comprised of 3 sub-area; Tatooine, Middle Earth, and Land of the Lost. The rock is Monzonite with an excellent patina and the routes range from 25 to 90 feet. Most of the climbs are sport, but there are also some fun gear climbs and it is worth bringing a rack.

  • As of March 2014, there are 160+ climbs in the area.
  • Jan 2015, 190+ climbs in area.
  • Nov 2015, 230+ climbs in area.

Getting There

From Hwy 18 and Joshua Rd in Apple Valley, go north on Joshua Rd.
At 3 miles turn right on Cahuilla
then drive 2.8 miles and turn left onto dirt road that is marked with a small metal pole with red stripes.
Then immediately (within 10 ft.) veer left onto a smaller single track dirt road.
Follow this road heading north and northwest for about 1.7 miles to the parking area. Keep Fairview mountain on your left side until you see the first major canyon which where the parking area is. The parking area sits slightly uphill at the base of the ridge that is next to the canyon (Just before getting to parking area, you will make a sharp left turn and go uphill to the parking area which is at the base of the rocky hill/ridge).
Look around for the cairn which marks the start of the hillside trail that weaves through the rocks heading west up the hill. Plan for about 10 to 15 minutes of hiking to get to Tatooine; 20 minutes to get to Middle Earth; and 25-30 minutes to the Land of the Lost. There is also a canyon trail that takes you past the Hoodie towards Middle Earth.

Took me a while to get out here but I'm glad I finally went, the climbing here is excellent! its truly a hidden gem. The routes here are exceptional with rock similar to that of horseman's center.

Can we not just call this for what it is, "The Backside of Margheritaville"?

Rough - it's not the backside of Margheritaville but the mountain across the dry lake to the southwest.

Like Horseman's Center, it's well bolted and thus a good place to push your leading abilities on J-tree granite. Unlike Horseman's Center, it feels remote and offers nice desert views.

Yes, lots of free, undeveloped camping along the north and east sides of Fairview Mountain.

If you prefer a potty, water, & a picnic table you can camp at horseman center. It's 10 min drive away. $6 to the city of AV, & $5 to the FD off HWY 18, & central for the use of the firepit. They will lock you in!!

Just curious - why the big dip in February for "Climbing Season" chart? Was thinking about heading out here this weekend...

I'm not sure how the climbing season chart is made but February is a great time to climb at Fairview. It may rain a bit more in February and can be colder, but rarely too cold for climbing. Just check the forecast before you go and bring warm clothes.

Anyone familiar with the crags across the lake bed, to the east? I was checking them out while climbing in Tatooine, they're just south of Johnson Road, looking to the east across the dry lake. Looks like big potential fun.

Also, a BIG thank you to whomever maintains this area. Very nice climbers trails, nice hardware on the routes. I found your ammo can!
