BETA PHOTO: The approach from the pipeline

Description

Facerock, referred to as "Hummingbird wall" in older texts, is a prominent block on the hillside below the Grey Cliffs. Its looming flat roof section comprises the left eyebrow of its facial features when seen from the east. It is easily identified from the green bridge. Several routes exist here. One on the south face and a few on the blue-grey west side. Potential for a couple more exists. Routes could do with a deal more cleaning. Wear a helmet and exercise caution.

Getting There

On the far side of the boulder routes abandon the pipeline trail and cut up the hillside on a vague trail. The hiking is steep and loose at first but comes out onto rock and then a screefield just beneath the crag. Beware of poison oak.

The main crack Zig-Zagging up the blue west face. Layback the first 10 feet in a unique alcove-start and blindly stuff some gear in the crack above you. Break out onto the face and keep yourself in the crack as it widens, steepens and the pump builds. Shove your arms in elbow-deep and find the good holds. This route is a gem. Still some loose blocks on a few ledges. Nice powerful climb....[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
