This little tower packs a whole lot of fun! Yes the rock is soft. Yes you will wish you had glasses or goggles but there are fun moves throughout and the view from the summit is surprisingly astonishing! No really! I got a perspective of the area that I did not expect. Have a camera along. Also bring lots of gear to sew it up. You should have fun on the lieback start (technical crux) and prepare for the boulder finish (heady crux).

Getting There

From the start of the Skutumpah road travel south for 2.6 miles and turn left on BLM road 520. This is located just prior to crossing the Sheep Creek Dam. Follow this rough double tract (2X4s with high clearance and good tires could work, 4X4s are better) for 1.6 miles. There is a wood cairn on the west side of the road. From here hike west doing your best to avoid the Crypto biotic soils and cows. You will soon see the top of the tower a short distance away. Come up on its southeast corner. Truck to tower is about 12 minutes. There are several possible lines you will see as you walk around the base but our line (Breakfast of Mutton, see above) is on the northwest corner in an obvious crack. It angles up and left to turn the cap rock.

Before you start this journey you should know that the line was cleaned, thus creating the material for the large cairn at the base. This, however, will not in any way mitigate the ever present feeling of fear from the soft and loose material inevitably found on this route. So look around at the many and varied gear options so as to sew it up. There are two cruxes. The start is a technical liebacking crux and the exit is an exposed heady crux to turn the overhanging cap rock. There are fun move...[more]   Browse More Classics in Utah
