All the above...nothing wrong with having one with you, but there is nothing better than the correct topo and a map. Êtrex vista is a good model. I use it for wild land fire, aircraft rescue and recreation. Problem with electronics is typically even more about battery life and operator error than anything. My guys must first know how to use a topo and compass before we issue them anything else.

Tree cover and drainages cause even more issues than clouds, heavy smoke or other environmental factors.

Practice with that thing before heading out, navagation with an new gps is worse than not having one. Geocaching is a good way to build skills...please note I am not into that sort of thing as a hobby but use the concept for training purposes...
