Erraid is a beautiful, small tidal island just off the west-most point of Mull. Access is provided by crossing a tidal sandbar on foot.

Climbing on Erraid is a wonderful experience. The granite is a lovely pink and grey and the scenery is amazing. Some routes are right over the water and as such are definitely deep-water solos.

Getting There

This can be a bit tricky. From Fionphort, take the small paved road south towards the Fidden Farm campground. Bear left at the campground to stay on the main paved road and continue to follow it to Knockvologan Farm. Park out of the way on the side of the road. When I was there we parked outside the gate near a house. I'm not sure if you can park further up the road or not.

Wherever you park, walk the road up to the main farmhouse and then follow the track down the hill. The path will turn round to the west, open out into some open grazing meadows along the seashore and come down to the sandy Erraid Sound.

Walk or wade north across the sound. Do not go straight across. On the northern end of the crossing we found it much easier to cross and pick up the trail to the crags. Look for a nice flat area that fans out and comes down to the sands. Follow the faint path and head west and a little south. The hills will begin to come closer together...just stay between them and keep heading west. If you start climbing the hills or really getting into tough terrain, you're going the wrong way. You should pass a few short walls on the left and cross a couple small streams. At this point, you'll see the beach at Traigh Gheal. Fantastic campsites abound.
