  • Description

This is the large chunk of rock due east of the Beginner Slab. If you're climbing on the slab, it will be directly behind you. On the east side of this rock is a good series of cracks, some long slab routes, and one of Wintergreen's only 5.12 sport climbs (5.12 comes to Wintergreen.)

    Getting There

From the parking lot, hike ~10 minutes down the Blackrock Trail (yellow blaze,) until it intersects with the Brimstone Trail (red blaze.) Turn right at the junction, hiking downhill, and in a few minutes you will see the Beginner Slab off to your right. To your left you will see a large outcrop of rock. Continue downhill on the Brimstone Trail (past the junction for The Cracks,) and when you reach the bottom of the East Walls (on your left,) bushwhack around the bottom. There are many climbs here, with the slab routes uphill on the east side.

Head up to a big left leaning flake, and stay right of the trees. You'll end up going past a series of horizontal cracks, until you reach two bolts on a section of rippled slab. Find nubbins to work through the thin slab (crux,) then head up left to a large tree with some static line and rap rings....[more]   Browse More Classics in Virginia
