The East Wall is a superb tier of rock on the far right (east) side of the Great Wall Complex. Like Jumping Frog Wall it saw some early route development in 2010 but was passed by until 2017 when it was given a thorough make over. It now boasts some of the finest and steepest moderate routes on Quadra and is especially recommended for its views and unique eastern exposure that catches early morning sun and provides good afternoon shade.

There is a significant amount of rock all around the East Wall representing the best potential for future route development at Chinese Mountains.

Getting There

The East Wall can be reached by following the access details for the Great Wall Complex and traversing right (east) under the complex. But if heading here directly it is better to take the main Chinese Mountains trail following the signs out of the parking lot for the South Peak.

Hike up the old cat track on the trail for about 10-15 minutes and then turn left at the sign-posted junction toward the South Peak lookout. The trail leads through some open mossy meadows and then into the forest and across a bridge. Leave the trail immediately on the west side of the bridge and follow the course of the creek to the left (south). The climbers' path traverses the hillside above the creek and then gradually makes a rising traverse up to the base of the East Wall. A perfect ledge leads out of the forest across the base of the routes.

This is a really varied route with a quick, early crux and then sustained interest throughout the rest of the climb. Start up an obvious short, flat-looking wall with a difficult 10d boulder move to get established on the rock. Work up a corner system and then at bolt 4 trend diagonally left through more short corners. Keep moving up on a strong diagonal-left line to a rest. Then climb direct past detached blocks to a large flake. Follow the flake up to a steep layback to finish....[more]   Browse More Classics in International
