Dogtown Park's 3600 acres reside within the borders of Gloucester and Rockport. It has an interesting history since its founding in 1642. The original settlement later became abandoned, opening the park to witches, vegabonds, and feral dogs. During the Great Depression, Roger Babson, a millionaire and founder of Babson College, commissioned unemployed stonecutters to carve inspirational inscriptions into dozens of boulders throughout the park.Today, hikers and mountain bikers use it on a regular basis. The park has numerous glacial erratics that await the adventurous boulderer.

Getting There

Take Route 128 to the Grant Circle Rotary. Take Rt.127 towards Annisquam, then take your first right off 127, and your first left onto Cherry Street. Follow to the parking lot.

Sit start down low with left hand on the arête and right hand really low on a hidden crimpy side pull. Move right hand up to a good positive side pull and bump up the classic twin aretes. Use a good left foot to get started. This has great movement on bullet hard rock....[more]   Browse More Classics in Massachusetts

Dogtown is a strange place for sure. There have been several books (fiction and non-fiction) written about the place. There was also a famous murder here in the '80s. In summer months in the quieter parts, there is a decent-sized homeless population. Sometimes you find them staring back at your through the trees. It can be a little unsettling.

Probably safer than Lynn Woods though!

"Cape Ann is perhaps the rockiest region in the state and boulders piled on - or around - other boulders is not that all uncommon. The famed Dogtown area has one rock formation where suicidal Abram Wharf crawled in to die after slitting his throat. " -- from the blog "Memoirs of a Rolling Stone"
