The Epilithic Wave of Mental Crux. Scary and beau...

Description

This area is not that popular, secluded, and offers sunnier climbing during the winter months. The rock, like a lot of SSV rock is often grainy and sharp. This isn't Eldo, but there won't be a line either.

Getting There

Deadman's Gulch is approximately 3.65 miles up SSV canyon from the intersection of US 36 and CO 7 in Lyons. There are large and small pullouts on the left at this distance up the canyon. Directly across CO 7 from this pulloff is the gulch which, during the wet months, has a small creek running through it. There are a few rock formations that host some short rock climbs that face south, the Atoll, the Dancehall of the Dead, the Shrine of Vanity, and the Deadman's Gulch Boulder.

Climbing Season

For the South Fork of St. Vrain Canyon area.

Epilithic Wave V1 5  CO : Lyons : ... : Mental Crux Boulder
Stand-start on the huge shelf/block at the bottom, then use the edge and cracks in the face to climb the lichen-y wave up and right to top out in the corner. It's technically easy, but it's also tall, exposed, and beautiful. The rock took a little cleaning but is fairly solid. The colorful lichen isn't really an issue for climbing, it just added aesthetics.A more complete problem could start from the ground instead of the shelf but would...[more]   Browse More Classics in CO
