On the south face of the boulder is a horizontal hand crack in an awkward flare. The Dead Animal traverses this crack from right to left, using hand and finger jams, as the ground drops away below you. After about ten feet of this you reach a scoop and can mantle up into it. The crack can be dirty, there is a bad landing, and the climbing is strenuous, awkward, and inobvious. It's anti-classic!

Pad and spotter. The boulder that used to give this problem a bad landing has been dug out and laid flat. The landing is no longer an issue.

The regular finish for the traverse is up the crack which goes at about 5.10, the mantle finish mentioned in the description adds a great deal of dificulty, I'd say v3 for the mantle finish, possibly v4. But I've been told it's 11b...

Just got on Dead Animal Traverse for the first time this weekend, and I'm sorry I passed it up so many times!

Great for you crack and awkward/unique movement aficionados out there. With three pads and a spotter to move them the landing is really not that bad.

After some time working the problem, I was able to complete the finish and had the start "wired". For me, two cruxes. First, an awkward and tough move in the middle where fingers rule the day, just before a left hand reach to the hand jams that begin the ending. Then, moving around and up the "corner" at the end.

Can't wait to get back out and slay this beast . . . then to try the mantle finish version!
