Description

Keeler Needle's imposing twin, located on its South side. While not as steep and clean as Keeler, Day Needle is a stunning 2,000' buttress that catches your eye and begs to be climbed. All who wander up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek stare and wonder what exists on this sweeping granite precipice. There are 4 known routes on this peak, with the easiest being IV 5.8 and harder lines up to V 5.12.

Getting There

The "other" needle next to Keeler. Visible from Hwy 395. Hike up the North Fork of Lone Pine Creek and circle the moraine field below Whitney's Direct East Face and Keeler.

The route described here is actually the Beckey-Reese East Face with the Cameron Burns/Steve Porcella 3-pitch direct variation finish known as "The Illywacker". It is unclear where Fred's route actually finishes - the Porcella/Burns book indicates it traverses off left below the headwall to finish, Secor describes 5.10 chimneys on the headwall, and in Fred's 100 Favorites books he talks about a rightward traverse below the headwall. Who actually knows? Described as a 16 pitch route elsewhere, we...[more]   Browse More Classics in California
