Description

Cueva Larga, "Long Cave" is a must-visit climb in Cuba. The routes offer a fun mix of textures while challenging your technique. The cool cave breeze allows for good conditions and a lot fewer mosquitoes. Check this place out!

Getting There

The approach to Cueva Larga is not too difficult, but I recommend getting the Cuba Climbing guidebook.
(Use the map in pictures for Mogote del Valle for an overview):

  • 1. Walk towards Raúl Reyes' farm. (From Salvador Cisneros and Adela Azcuy, walk Northwest on Adela Azcuy, passing the baseball field).

  • 2. When you come to the fork in the road before Raúls' farm, do not turn right to Raúl's. Instead, turn left at the fork. You will pass by the restaurant with outdoor seating.

  • 3. This next part is a little tricky. Sorry, but it's all undeveloped and exists for farmers (not climbers). You will come across three "primary" trails on the right (there are minor little ones too). The first one has no houses next to it. The second has a house to the left of the trail once you get on it. The third (the one you want) will have a house on the right once you get on it. (see picture)

  • 4. Turn right on the third trail and walk towards the rocks. You will see La Yunta and Guajiro Ecologico in front of you.

  • 5. Make your way to the left of La Yunta and the trail for Cueva Larga will become apparent when you get to the treeline. The trail for Cueva Larga is about 75 meters to the left of La Yunta (if memory serves right).

Be mindful when crossing farm land. You can usually find a dirt trail in between fields so you aren't crossing over their crops.

Oculta Obsesión is an undervalued route for the area. This sweet, overhanging route has great movement and tests your strength, balance and technique. There's a break right in the middle (where you need it!) by leaning into the flake with your head/shoulder (sorry short people). After that, pump your way to victory right when the steepness is almost unbearable. Great climb! You kick the pedal and the motor starts gurgling and purring. You cruise through a smooth, winding road...[more]   Browse More Classics in International
