NC's primo snow slope!

Description

Possibly the best of the Celo routes. Ascend the large left facing corner to the more obvious ice. Climb, scramble and occasionally walk to the end of the slide. Pick up the sawed trail (re-cut as of 12/2012) at its very end and head to the top. Descend the Woody Ridge Trail (be sure to follow the WR trail across the rock step near the top).

Location

Travel South on NC 80 from Micaville.
Turn right on 1157 and bear right onto 1156.
Take 1156 to the Woody Ridge Trail Head. We often camp in the woods here or better yet continue on 1157 to the end of the road for a flatter/quieter sleeping spot.
The Woody Ridge Trail begins with ascending logging road switchbacks and then flattens out as it moves north. The trail reaches a large flat shoulder and begins to steeply ascend the mountain side. Leave the trail here by continuing to head North on the flat roads crossing several springs and small streams. Cross a major stream and then another. The road ends here (at this second major creek crossing) and a faint trail begins climbing the hillside West up the mountains. Ascend staying close to the stream until you locate a 25' waterfall. This is the Brown's Creek route. Crescent starts behind the rock buttress to the left of Brown's Creek.

Protection

3-6 short/medium screws
long slings

rating: WI3- Mod. Snow

Bored out of my gourd and praying for winter to come for real.
Crescent is very good and easily managed with a 30m rope through the few sections of WI 3-. Also a casual solo with a friend.
Ice screws aside (I no longer carry them), the snow is much more critical than the actual ice flow. If there is a good 4"+ dump the climbing is as good as any moderate snow/ice Alpine route as I have ever done.

All but 2 or 3 sections of front pointing technical sections/bulges can be circumnavigated through bush ledges and snow shoots.
