Tryin to avoid the butt dab

Description

Start low and left in the pit at an obvious jug at eye level. Move up and round the corner to your right onto the face and up arete to mantle topout. Hard to avoid the butt-dab on the rock behind you.

Location

In the center of the Group A boulder cluster, the face faces north.

Overhanging Boulder uphill and more or less in the center of the Group A boulder cluster. The overhanging face faces north. Problems start in a pit. Worth a session if you have done everything else.

Protection

Pad on the ledge behind you. You will fall into the pit if you peel.

Variation exists (among other obvious variations) that might get you another number on your 8a scorecard, same start and once rounded the corner stay on the face, avoiding the arete. Big moves on good holds and ledges, very fun also.

Yeah we were looking at that variation... rough estimate without using the top of the boulder V5-6 maybe? We're also developing some other slab problems over there, it's nice to see camp A getting some action! Glad you like it!

Yeah perhaps. I am very bad at boulder problem rating estimates. There are a couple ways to do it, and one is much harder but is a double eliminate for sure (eliminating the arete and also one of the better ledges). Nice job finding this stuff.

I thought that the best line on this boulder started as cool hand luke, traversed right and up accross the middle of the boulder using cross throughs and heal hooks (not using the top), and finish with the top moves of just dew it. I climbed it today, felt like a solid V5, and very very good. Should maybe be its own route listing.

Agreed!- this is the 'double eliminate' I was referring to, but it's different enough (and super fun/long/hard) to probably warrant a different name/grade. Pretty cool boulder huh? Find anything new?

EDIT: OK I added it Chris, see "Chris Cross Choss". Good call.

Ugh... there was a birds nest complete with multiple eggs on one of the key holds today. This thing looks like tons of fun. Next time...
