Great view of Harwood's NE face from upper snowfie...

Description

This route heads up from the base of the northeast face of Harwood to the narrow section of Devil's Backbone. I initially used it as an escape from the bottom of the northeast face due to really big junk falling off said face. It's an easy climb in a usually quiet location with little rockfall risk (once on route) and shade the whole time in winter.

Location

Park at the 3n06 gate described in several other Harwood pages here on MP. You'll hike west along the canyon near the base of the ridge towards the base of Harwood's NE face. Essentially, follow the biggest drainage. This is easy to understand when you look on Google Maps or Earth.

The route starts right at the base of the face. Instead of going up the NE face, turn south and go up the shaded (and thus typically safe) north face of Devils Backbone. Route tops out on the DBB trail, giving you many options for the rest of your day, and descent.

Advised descent is by the ridge heading east down to the gate. Please refer to the other Harwood pages for this. As always, bring your map and use it. Be smart.

Protection

None required. If chosen, pickets and a very light rock rack with nuts.

John Mendenhall did the FA on this couloir, not Rocky Raccoon. Check the old issues of Mugelnoos.

Careful.....you forget who's shoulders you stand on to gain the knowledge and techniques we use today. Mendenhall was a great mountaineer. John Mendenhall climbed many great routes in ranges far beyond your crumbling castle.

Ben, I'm sure you're a swell guy in real life, but you're not quite the sharpest crayon in the shed on here. I know who Mendenhall is.

Ha....Ha...Ha. You couldn't even hold John Mendenhall's jock strap.
WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD, Del. You are truly a big fish in your tiny pond.

Clearly you are not well acquainted with John's undergarment selection. As one of his most trusted aides, I have been privy to his wardrobe and I have seen that he did not even possess a jock strap, for he had no use of such things.

I do not require one either, as there are no jock straps currently available on the market to hold my beanbag chair-size testicles in place while climbing. I have resorted to throwing my scrotum over my right shoulder, and coiling my penis around my chest many times in a manner akin to rope during glacier travel. This has proven extremely uncomfortable at times, but I am a real man and such things do not phase me in the slightest.

I must however ask why you are so interested in John's crotchal region. Are there issues in your past that come to the surface? Did your uncle touch you? Perhaps you drew one too many phallic illustrations as a child and found yourself craving some meaty cylinders?

This is not a problem however, as I accept everyone as they are. I am an all-loving and accepting God-King. Bow before me and I shall cleanse your soul of all meaty-desires and you may kiss my feet for $40.

Was Ruth Mendenhall having an affair with Mr. Raccoon while Jon was out bagging peaks?

Del......you are a legend in your own mind. Unfortunately, your grasp on reality is so diminished in proportion to your beanbag (and ego)......keep sharpening your crayons and running from the legend of John Mendenhall.

Tristan.....that's pretty funny, but no. Ruth Dyer Mendenhall was doing the FA on the Swiss Arête on Mt. Sill.
Rocky Raccoon, Skeletor, and Captain Planet are all Taco's invisible play friends, and only exist in Taco's imagination and on these erroneous posts that he calls route descriptions.

After all, how difficult could it be to type in J. Mendenhall as the FA, instead of pandering to an overinflated ego to list fictitious childhood heroes as the FA??

It sounds just a little bit like you're describing yourself there, buddy.
