Colombia Jan-Feb climbing areas

I will be climbing in Colombia early January till the end of February and was hoping people had some information about areas other than Suesca and La Mojarra. I will be spending some time at both spots but also am interested in getting out on some longer multi pitch climbs (preferably trad) that involve a bit of exploration. I was doing some research into the Sierra Nevada de Cocuy range but not much info is out there in terms of climbing. If anyone has any advice/ info that would be greatly appreciated! And if you guys find yourselves heading in that direction definitely reach out! Thanks!

Hey dude, awesome that you're going to Colombia, gorgeous country with a lot to offer. In terms of Climbing the country has several hotspots, the most known are Suesca and La Mojarra, you have to check them out. Aside from those two... first I'll recommend the Sport crags I've been... so

• Machetá (near Bogotá) I found the style quite similar to Red River Gorge, overhanging/badass. 
• Florian (Near Bucaramanga) very very interesting place with hard routes, 11-13.
• Piedra de El Peñol (near Medellin) huge HUGE piece of rock out of nowhere that is surrounded by dozens of little lakes, beautiful place, and nice slab climbing. There are sport, aid, and trad routes.  
• Sutatausa (near Bogota) gorgeous rock formation and beautiful place to hike, nice overhang-ish routes. Sport/Mixed
• Nevado del Ruiz (near Manizales) alpine environment where you'll find sport and some trad.
• Payande (2hrs from Bogota) crag next to a river, a couple of Deep Water soloing boulder problems, haven't been though. 
• Pasto (16hrs away by car from Bogota) there are 5 huge crags here so worthy of check it out IF you decide to venture that south
• La Sierra Nevada del Cocuy used to be a top spot for Trad/Alpine climbing buuuuuuuut... tourists that visited the park usually left the place with a lot of trash and the whole National Park is part of the U'wa tribe... they decided to close the park back in 2015 (??maybe 14) for everyone... including climbers. They reopened again sometime this year with the condition that no one could step on the snow and no climbing but then 3 young imbeciles decided that rules don't apply to them took some pictures fooling around in the snow and the park is closed, word says permanently.

Thanks for the info! Bummer to hear about the closure of the park but I will definitely look into some of those other areas you mentioned. 

Hey Ryan, cool plans man. Was doing some research for longer multipitch trad climbs as well and mailed with some guides but nothing came much further than the 150m of Suesca. I’m stuck to the Santander region (Majorra/Cocuy and could go to Suesca) for the last two weeks of January. 

I remember vaguely some rock faces perhaps suitable for some exploratory climbing when I was in Jordan, Santander (tiny village close to San Gil) two years ago. I will look around better, going there in some days but practically can start climbing in second half of January. 

Will follow here and try to find more myself. Keep you posted.

Awesome! I'll be in the Mojarra area until the end of January and then will probably go and spend a few weeks climbing in Suesca. If anyone is around and needs a partner let me know! 

OK great, we can meet in la mojarra, I’ll spend some days there and in Suesca, I brought all gear incl trad

I'll also be moving around looking to climb. Not sure what gear I will bring yet, but probably a single rack + rope. Definitely interested in getting into some exploratory multipitch adventures, or doing some sport around La Mojarra! 

Heading to la Mojarra this Tuesday (16th), staying at Refugio La Roca or the place next door. Anyone there?
