Coll de Nargó're in Catalonia, son.

Driving north on the C-14, towards Andorra, paralleling the Oliana reservoir, as one nears the small town of Coll de Nargó , one can’t help but notice the long, south facing limestone ridgeline.

Coll de Nargó, that long ridgeline above the crag’s namesake town, has around 175 routes spread amongst its 11 sectors. The limestone is well featured and fairly sticky, with nearly 75% of the routes at the 5 and 6 grades. Routes range from 3 to 7c with fun for nearly everyone but surely this is a moderate climber’s raison d’être.

This south facing location is good for spring, fall and even mild winter climbing. Could be a touch too warm in the summer months.

Most of the routes are well equipped but notable are some routes at especially the Coll Piqué sector that have been left for a more traditional feel (cams and nuts). The area is largely single pitch, with, several 2, 3 and 4 pitch routes especially on the west side of the escarpment. 60m rope recommended as adequate for most climbing with routes rigged for single rope rappels.

Where to stay:

There’s rumor of camping at the end of the road in the field below the Agulla Gran. The usual “keep it clean and absolutely no fires” apply here. Say it again, fires are prohibited.

There’s a couple hotels in town: Hotel Betriu (Tel 973 383 020) and Fonda del Lago (Tel 973 383 022).
Camping 7km towards Andorra at Organyà (Tel 973 382 039).

Anther option is to take advantage of the off season ski lodging in Andorra. Truly some remarkable deals. As well as gettin’ your duty free shopping on.

For food, there are a couple of restaurants in town: Hotel Betriu and Fonda del Lago. The Bar/Restaurant Tahussà has food options, cold cerveza, and climbing beta (possibility of a local guidebook) as well as a nice hang following climbing. There’s a fountain for water about 50m west of the bar.

If coming from the south, no shortage of groceries in Ponts (along with take away sandwiches and pastries) and Andorra has plenty of the same if coming from the north.

Getting There

Located on the C-14 40 kilometers south of Andorra.

Drive through town on the L-511 and note the eleventh century Romanesque church of Sant Climent on the left. Across the street from the church, turn right on a paved road uphill past the ball field and school towards the obvious line of steep limestone on the crest of the hillside north of town. Note a sign, "Montanisell" "Escalada" for short turn to the right; then, the road hairpins back to the left. After a couple hundred meters, and, roughly below the right side of the cliffs above, find a parking spot. This gives access to the D’Abaix, Dipòsits and Bel Canto sectors.

To access the sectors to the west, continue driving on the road which turns to dirt.

Pull off on the side depending on the sector. The main parking lot is at Coll Piqué with some of the higher sectors nearby.

Don't miss this classic if you hit this crag!Start up on a high ledge just left of a small tree. Head up easy terrain to set up underneath a perfectly protected roof. Bust some moves up an over the roof (easier on the left). Have a blast climbing up super sequences and great holds for about 30'. As the angel eases back a bit, wonder where all the big jugs went and change your mindset to tricky slab. Fire the moves, which end up being loads of fun to anoth...[more]   Browse More Classics in International

Loved the area! Had a great day at an entirely empty crag. Splurged and stayed at Hotel Dom just up the road (5km) in Organya. The food at the restaurant (Restaurante Val) inside the hotel was the best food we had in all of Spain. Plus breakfast was included. Highly recommended!
